Richard POWERPartner - Clyde & Co LLP

Richard is a partner in Clyde & Co's Global Arbitration Group. He is a specialist in energy law, and chairs Clyde & Co's Power & Renewables Sector Focus Group.

Richard studied economics and law in South Africa before reading for a Masters of Law at St John's College, Cambridge. After 14 years at legacy Berwin Leighton Paisner, where he was Co-Head of International Arbitration, Richard joined Clyde & Co in 2015.

He has a particular focus on the power sector, especially "clean energy" including hydrogen, solar and wind power. He advises major utilities, independent power producers and major network owners on commercial, corporate and contractual disputes; PPA and gas supply contract price reviews; judicial reviews and regulatory disputes; Energy Charter Treaty/investment treaty claims and general risk management. Richard has acted for a wide range of clients from around the world, including Scottish Power, National Grid, Community Windpower, INEOS and E.ON E&P.  Richard recently acted for Speciality Steel UK Ltd in their response to Tempus Energy Ltd's judicial review of the UK Capacity Market.

As well as authoring a series of articles on the energy transition, including the drive for decentralisation and digitisation, Richard is the author of the Energy Arbitrations chapter of Global Arbitration Review's European Arbitration Review for 2017, 2018 and 2019 and regularly contributes articles on the energy sector to such industry publications as Energy Voice, Energy Economist and Energy Global.
