Key takeaways

  • Mobility and transportation is a key area of cooperation between FRANCE and UAE;
  • How innovation can create a unique experience for citizens and open new opportunities;
  • How demand will evolve and what will be the evolution of behavior;
  • Ridership in public transport was around 50% compared to a previous year on the global basis all cities all major cities included; it went down to 5% even at the a very hard lockdown period; Now we are back at around 60 to 70% in major European cities;
  • There will less urban mobility for commuting and that would be the impact of penetration of teleworking which impact roughly 40% of workers and by the way there will be side effect for a public transport operator in terms of lowering pressure on peak time ridership and an onboard load which is very important in terms of sizing of the infrastructure and the equipment;
  • So less commuting - people will move differently
  • Share mobility is at risk right now: the key criteria when you select and when you plan a trip, 40% declare social distancing is absolutely priority; 40% nuclear cleanliness/disinfected environment and only 20% called pricing or duration so it's a complete shift in terms of mobility expectation and behavior;
  • Social distancing is the first criteria so we are deploying a solution that enrich customer information around load on board forecasts and visibility;
  • A footprint for an operator to adjust the offer to the demand in real time;
  • A key challenge for mobility and public transport in the future is how to be able to be more flexible: to adapt the offer to the demand on the real time not with fixed timetable and to be more flexible using and leveraging real-time data;
  • A trend for cooperation between the private and public sectors (the PPPs: public private partnerships);
  • Discount that RTA have applied on some of the commercial contract it reached up from 40 to 60 percent and some a lot of payment development that is also in terms of incentives for those investment;
  • Planning for PPP, it means you have to plan for your financial sustainability and being infrastructure developer in the core essence;
  • RTA investment strategy: alternative financing, PPP, providing and creating opportunities for private sector, specialized strategy for PPP that consists of projects initiatives;
  • RTM: a RTA virtual platform will be launched hopefully by Q2 2021: to enable RTA and the business community to interact in a more efficient way;  not only receiving proposals, not only receiving new ideas but also receiving any concerns or questions from our investor whether they are a PPP a mega strategical investor or a small investor;
  • Currently 12 projects as a PPP project in RTA and 13 major infrastructure projects coming;
  • In Masdar city, how important the wider public transportation and important to our success as a sustainable city: the future of public of transportation is electric, it's shared and it's autonomous;
  • Two things: one is sustainability and the other one is innovation;
  • About 15% of our carbon emissions come from surface transportation;
  • the UAE has really done an outstanding job at introducing renewable energy for a carbon producing country, for a country with a lot of oil and gas reserves;
  • But we need to do better at transportation, in terms of reducing our surface transportation;
  • Sustainability transportation is important: we spend hours in transportation, so make it walkable and then connect to public transportation;
  • Two surprises:
    • the rise of autonomous, we would have not talked about autonomous as the future of transportation if we would have had this conversation 10 years ago,
    • not a positive one: the slow uptake of electric vehicles;
  • Integrate with public transportation: better off with a multi-mobile solution (multiple forms of transportation),
  • The next phase of autonomous transportation is NAVYA;
  • The lessons learned are multimodal and integration with public transportation;
  • The best urban transportation electric, auto electric and shared is the metro system;
  • There are some of the innovational abilities you're driven by technology (electrical vehicles) and some other innovations are more driven by business models (share mobility): it's more about the way we design the offer;
  • Multi-modality is the key word: the passengers are going to expect to be taken care of on their origin to their destination;
  • Request the transmission and mobility mode to be more inclusive, they are taking off individually and that in a collective way; at the very beginning on the first mile and at the last mile, you need to have the sustainable capacity, speed and performance mode;
  • How to make the translation more inclusive to the passenger at the end of the day: so connectivity, multi-modality and sustainability are the key words of the transport’s future;
  • The infrastructure will need to get smarter: the PPPs are very important, to make sure that the combination between the vehicles and the infrastructure is smooth;
  • Mobility orchestration (Alstom’s new product called Masteria: all of these different transportation mode that the customer will have to enjoy will remain connected, will remain efficient including during big times);
  • The quality of service to the passenger is the key because that's where you know the sustainability will come from;
  • Collaboration and PPP: the respective role of the public sector and private sector in mobility: a large number of the innovation we've seen over the last years we're coming from the private sector (EV and share mobility) and we have to integrate this innovation with the public transportation and with value players;
  • What are the barriers to overcome to create a better environment for cooperation between private players and public players? the most challenging factor of this partnership is there's no a traditional framework, a lot of effort from both parties to understand each other's needs, the main thing is to be flexible;
  • The key success factors for this cooperation is all about working together: to make sure that all stakeholders are on board, how they are going to contribute is also something very important, working together from a shared vision is very important; putting the customer at the center, there is another stakeholder we should take into consideration: is the companies / the corporate as employers for driving and organizing the mobility of their employees, they can orchestrate and optimize the mobility of their employees not only for the sake of their own benefit but as a contribution to the whole mobility system on the territory;
  • The public sector has a big role in the regulatory environment that enables the private sector to be successful;
  • We need to do renewable energy putting those public private partnerships;
  • Unbelievable breakthrough all based on public-private partnerships and to the point where you no longer need public-private partnerships you just need to let the private sector be unleashed the public did the public sector did its job created that environment created the economic incentives when there weren't commercial economic incentives and now there are and i think we need we can do the same thing around transportation;
  • What are the main drivers of mobility whether it's the city infrastructure actually supposed to drive innovation mobility or on the other side it's more the mobility that is supposed to drive the city shapes and infrastructure?
    • Everything should start from a vision for the city and the future city and then the public transport or operator or mobility operator provider should be in the game quite early to contribute.
