MENA IMPACT | Can AI Help Us Achieve the Sustainable Development Goals?
AI is everywhere, in the headlines, at work, and in our daily lives. You cannot ignore the wave, nor the hype around it. According to the UN, AI could contribute to achieving up to 70% of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This represents a massive opportunity to harness technology for the betterment of people and the planet.
The UAE is positioning itself at the forefront of this transformation, from making massive investments and developing its own Large Language Models (LLMs) such as Falcon and K2 Think, to ranking among the world’s top 20 nations for AI talent density. Yet, AI’s rapid progress comes with environmental costs: its enormous computing power consumes vast amounts of energy and water.
In theLet's Turn the Tidepodcast by Veolia Near & Middle East — with a special series in partnership with Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi and produced by MENA Impact — we explored exactly this paradox. AI has the potential to accelerate progress in areas like waste management, but the global race for AI advancement also raises critical environmental concerns.
